This is a vintage Gibson J-40 dreadnought acoustic. According to The Guitar Dater Project, the serial number places this particular example's manufacture date between 1970 and 1972. Taking into account that this guitar is approximately 50 years old, it's in pretty good condition, overall. Total weight is 4 lb. 2 oz.

There is a repaired chip near the heel of the neck (see photo) as well as assorted small chips, dings and impressions. There's some evidence of the pickguard pulling and a small fracture near the guard. The crack doesn't appear to have penetrated the top and may only be lacquer cracking. The tuners are a bit tight but still hold tuning well. The frets may have been replaced at some point in the past as they don't show much wear for the vintage.

The good news is that this guitar has had a fresh neck reset and has had a new bone saddle installed so it's set up to play great. The action is low and smooth and the playability is fast and easy. The neck has the narrow nut width and slim "C" profile commonly associated with Gibson guitars of this era. Tonally, she's got very good punch, projection and volume. It's a warm and woody sounding guitar with sweet, smooth treble response.

Included is the original black and gold Gibson hard case that's in good condition for the year with no major damage outside of some tape on the front edge. It's not too common to find a nice vintage Gibson acoustic in the $1k range these days. This is a great buy on a nice vintage player!
