Gibson SG Special Faded Worn Ebony c.2007
If you’ve got a showdown with the devil and need an axe that can stand up to the heat look no further. A bit of a rare breed, this Gibson SG Special was produced in a 2007 run of Gibson’s Faded series and is finished in a rustic Worn Ebony. Kluson tuners and a tune-o-matic bridge will keep you in tune no matter how weird you get with it, and the slightly chunky neck gives plenty to grab on to whilst face-melting.
Devilish good looks and a broken in feel are all well and good, but if you’re about to face off with Beelzebub you’re gunna need the tone to boot. Lucky for you Gibson outfitted this SG with hot humbuckers and a steely grin straight from the factory, and Zappa himself would agree this guitar absolutely rips. Tone is powerful, and thrives when overdriven. Of course, you could play this guitar through a clean amp and get useable tones, but even when playing through the cleanest fender tube amps this guitar gives off a vibe it would rather get gritty. The bridge has a sizzle and crunch that matches it’s raucous aesthetic. The neck pickup warms up as it should, still maintaining the powerful energy that defines this guitar, and the middle position strikes a perfect balance. I said it once, and I’ll say it again - this baby wants to get down & dirty.
This guitar is not for the faint of heart, nor for the pristine cleans and glassy tones you’ll find elsewhere. Then again, that’s certainly not what you need to send the Prince of Darkness back to the depths from whence he came… You’ll need a lean mean machine capable of serving up raw, powerful riffage. In that case, perhaps this is just the axe you’ve been looking for.
